Football Bet of the Day: Ajax – Thursday 9 February, 2023

Back Ajax-1 on the -1.0 Match Handicap market at 5/2

No doubt many of you would have seen some column inches spent on the problems at Ajax in recent weeks. The Dutch giant have had a stuttering start to life following the winter break but in their previous two games, they’ve managed to finally burst that dam and score plenty of goals. They’ve plundered nine with resounding 1-4 and 0-5 scorelines leading to victories and much needed confidence.

I very nearly played the Dusan Tadic to score anytime line at 23/10 line as he’s moved to a central position in both of those games and found the back of the net. The former Southampton man is also their penalty taker and in this VAR era, that is always worth a little bit extra. I chose not to just because of the chance he reverts to his left-wing role in a front three but if the team sheet comes out and he’s playing up top – that is a good price.

Back to the actual bet tipped up above. FC Twente have been incredibly solid this season but they bruised me on Sunday but failing to go on the road and beat a side who haven’t won since October. They scored early too but couldn’t hold on. That left a bad taste in the mouth and their strength this campaign has been at the back but the cracks are starting to emerge as relegation-threatened Groningen did manage 19 shots, seven of which were on target in that game. Worrying times.

Ajax’s problem since the restart hasn’t been creating chances or having shots on goal but turning those attempts into goals. In the past two they seem to have turned the corner and they could still very well be the best team in the Netherlands. I would have liked to play the straight up result market but Ajax are 19/20 so falls foul of my self-inflicted Evens or Longer policy. Drat. Therefore I’ll push it to them winning even with a one-goal handicap because if they are back firing in front of goal, they’ll score two or three at least most games.
